The Label Conundrum

As a solo female service-based business owner, you've probably encountered the age-old question: what do you call yourself? Are you a founder, a business owner, a freelancer, a solopreneur, or an entrepreneur? Does it even matter? The debate around title terminology has been raging for years, and it's time we weighed in.

The Trouble with Titles

The word "founder" often conjures up images of tech startups and product-based businesses, the kind of companies you'd expect to see on Dragons' Den or in the pages of Forbes. It implies a certain level of scale, complexity, and innovation that might not be relevant to your service-based business. On the other hand, "freelancer" can feel a bit too casual, implying a lack of stability or seriousness. And what about "solopreneur"? Is that even a real word?

The Power of Language

As women, we know that language has the power to shape our perceptions and our realities. The words we use to describe ourselves and our businesses can either empower or limit us. So, it's worth taking a closer look at the terminology we use. Do we want to adopt the same labels as the tech bros and product-based entrepreneurs, or do we want to forge our own path?

What's in a Name?

At the end of the day, does it really matter what you call yourself? Maybe not. What matters is the value you bring to your clients, the quality of your work, and the impact you have on your community. And yet, language has a way of shaping our identity and our sense of self-worth. When we use a title that feels authentic and accurate, we're more likely to feel confident, capable, and proud of our accomplishments.

A New Conversation

So, let's start a new conversation. What do you call yourself? Do you identify as a founder, a business owner, a freelancer, a solopreneur, or something else entirely? Do you think the terminology matters, or is it just a distraction from the real work of building a successful business? We want to hear from you. Share your thoughts, and let's explore this topic further together.

At What She Said, we're committed to creating a space that feels inclusive, supportive, and authentic for all our members.
